Addisz-Abeba városházának szóvivője közölte, hogy a halottak zöme nő és gyermek. Hozzátette, félő, hogy további áldozatok vannak a szemétgörgeteg alatt. 37 embert sikerült élve kimenteni, közülük ketten súlyos sérüléseket szenvedtek.

Egy helyi lakos elmondása szerint a csuszamlás idején mintegy másfélszázan voltak a hulladékhegy tövében, sokan laknak ott hevenyészett viskókban.
