Fancy a peep? or What is under the kilt?

I can’t decide whether it’s funny or simply interesting that the English, the Irish and – in accordance with the common belief – the Scottish all claim the traditional wear, the tartan checked skirt, i. e. the kilt, to be their own ancient garment. For people of these nations this fact must be rather annoying.

Truth or not, no evidence has been found to back the righteous thinking of the English and the Irish. Additionally, traces in the archived history seem to be confusing as far as the origin of the Scottish tradition is concerned.
Well, yes, Braveheart. Please, don’t take this Hollywood blockbuster movie for granted: it’s nothing but an information-collage, making a mess of history. Firstly, the story is set in the 1200s AD. The warriors wear kilts, even though the kilt didn’t appear until around the 1600s. Secondly, the warriors’ faces are painted blue which was a relatively speaking ’craze’ only in the 2nd century.
So there is no room for further guessing. Only tunics or long-and-wide sleeved shirts were worn before.

Fair enough, but how can one recognise a genuine kilt?
A man’s kilt covers the waist and thighs of the wearer. The overlapping front panels open on the right providing free movement for the legs. A kilt can go down as far as the knees or just above them. Why? It has to be protected; it shouldn’t reach the ground when kneeling.
Now, let’s see – what is worn under the kilt?
Peeping to find it out seems to never end. If a typical Scotsman is asked, he would definitely say ‘nothing’. Actually, wearing nothing depends only on how daring the wearer is. In case you decide to be a ‘Braveheart’, but you are not courageous enough to go naked underneath, be sure that all you wear is a pair of black briefs and nothing else.
