Despite links with either a return to Ferrari or a switch to Red Bull or Toyota, Brawn, 52, has replaced Nick Fry at Honda.
Fry will remain at the Japanese team as chief executive.
The move follows Brawn’s one-year sabbatical in 2007 after 10 years technically guiding the ultra-successful Michael Schumacher era at the Scuderia.
Honda floundered to an embarrassing low this year as Jenson Button delivered just six points and team-mate Rubens Barrichello ended the first of his 15 seasons in Formula One without troubling the score sheets.
Brawn’s talks with Ferrari broke down in October and he chose to conduct high-level discussions earlier this month with Fry.
