Elindult a mekkai zarándoklat, az iszlám világ legszentebb ünnepe. A világ minden tájáról kétmillió hívő - a szaúdi hatóságok ennyi engedélyt adnak ki évente - gyűlt össze Arafat hegyénél, ahol hitük szerint Isten megbocsátott Ádámnak és Évának, Mohamed próféta pedig elmondta az utolsó szentbeszédét. A kegyelem hegyének is nevezett helyszínen a hívők a rítus szerint megvizsgálják lelkiismeretüket és tisztaságukat, prédikációt hallgatnak, elmélkednek késő délutánig. A rendet mintegy százezer biztonsági őr hivatott fenntartani.
