When can I use what and that?

These two pronouns are often mixed and used in a wrong way.

What = the thing(s) that…( it
always refers to verbs)



What happened was my fault.
( the
thing that happened)


I don’t know what you mean.

That can be used when we are talking about things:



The machine that broke
down is now working again.


I don’t like stories that have unhappy endings.
